Monarch Money alternative
Monarch is what most Mint refugees landed on: bank syncing, budgets, a household view, and since 2026 a Plus tier with retirement forecasting. It is a good product at $99.99 a year. Tesserae is the other answer to the same question, one that never asks for your bank login and goes deeper on retirement, for $29.99. Here is where each one wins.
What Monarch is
Monarch is an aggregator first: it links your accounts, pulls transactions, categorizes them, and builds budgets, net worth, and investment views on top. The Core plan is $99.99 a year (about $8.33 a month) or $14.99 month to month, with unlimited account syncing, an AI assistant, and a shared household for couples. The Plus plan, $199 a year, adds retirement forecasting, what-if scenarios, investment analysis, and business and rental income tracking. Both come with a 7-day trial.

Where Monarch wins
- Automatic everything. Transactions arrive, get categorized, and the budget updates itself. If you want to look rather than type, this is the better product.
- Investment holdings. Monarch sees the positions inside your brokerage accounts. Tesserae tracks the account balance and your equity grants, not every holding.
- The AI assistant and the polish. It is a well-funded product with a large team, and it shows.
- Business and rental income, on Plus. Tesserae has no business bookkeeping.
Where Tesserae wins
- No bank login, by design. No aggregator holds your credentials, no feed breaks when a bank changes its login page, and no business model depends on your transaction data.
- Retirement depth. Monarch Plus forecasts. Tesserae models: Roth conversion ladders and the bridge to 59½, RMDs, Social Security timing including the projected 2033 cut, withdrawal order across taxable, traditional, and Roth accounts, and 1,000 randomized market runs, all against your real accounts.
- The check-in. Ten minutes a month typing balances in is the part that makes the numbers stick. Automatic is convenient and forgettable.
- Price. $29.99 a year against $99.99, or $199 for the tier that forecasts.
Where Tesserae loses
If you will not enter your numbers by hand, Tesserae is the wrong tool. It's US-only and dollars-only, it doesn't categorize transactions or see inside brokerage holdings, and there is no AI assistant. The imports soften the entry; the design is still a monthly check-in.
Who should pick what
- You want Mint with a price tag and no effort: Monarch Core.
- You want that plus a forecast, and $199 is fine: Monarch Plus.
- You'd rather know your numbers than watch them, and the retirement math matters to you: Tesserae.
