YNAB alternative

YNAB is the best-known budgeting method on the market, and it is priced like one: $14.99 a month or $109 a year. Tesserae is a different shape of tool, a whole-picture planner you fill in yourself, with a budget inside it and a retirement engine underneath, for $29.99 a year. This page is for deciding which shape you need.

What YNAB is

YNAB stands for You Need A Budget, and the app is a vehicle for its four rules: give every dollar a job, embrace your true expenses, roll with the punches, age your money. It syncs with more than 12,000 banks through Plaid, or you can enter transactions by hand. There is one plan with everything in it, family sharing for up to six people, free workshops, and a 34-day trial. What it does not do is plan retirement. It has no projection, no Monte Carlo, no tax modeling. It is a budgeting method, done very well.

Where YNAB wins

  • The method. If you have never budgeted, the four rules and the workshops teach a habit. Tesserae gives you targets and a plan-every-dollar mode, but it does not teach a philosophy.
  • Automatic transactions. Plaid brings your spending in on its own. In Tesserae you record it, or import a file.
  • The trial. 34 days is enough to live a full month on the system before paying.
  • Family sharing. Six seats on one plan. Tesserae is built for a household of two.

Where Tesserae wins

  • The whole picture, not just the budget. Net worth, income, a cash-flow forecast, equity, taxes, goals, and a retirement plan share one set of numbers. YNAB stops at the budget by design.
  • Retirement math YNAB doesn't attempt. Odds your money lasts across 1,000 market paths, Roth conversion ladders and the bridge to 59½, RMDs, Social Security timing, withdrawal order. Against your real accounts, not a separate calculator.
  • No bank login anywhere. You can run YNAB manually too, but it is designed around the sync. Tesserae is designed around the ten-minute check-in, and entering your numbers is what makes you fluent in them.
  • Price. $29.99 a year against $109.

Where Tesserae loses

If the thing you need is a spending method with daily transaction discipline, YNAB is better at that one job, and Tesserae's budget will feel lighter. Tesserae is US-only and dollars-only, it doesn't categorize transactions for you, and the household is two people, not six.

Who should pick what

  • Paycheck-to-paycheck and need to change spending habits: YNAB.
  • Budget is fine, the question is "am I on track, and when could I stop?": Tesserae.
  • Both: a lot of people run YNAB for daily spending and a planner for the long view. At $29.99 a year Tesserae is the cheap half of that pair.
